KARACHI - Five out of six power units of Bin Qasim power plant have been running on gas, The Nation has learnt here on Monday. This leads to low pressure of gas and also the reduction of about 200 megawatts from the total of 800MW electricity generation of power plant.
Sources on condition of anonymity told The Nation that as there was an increase in oil price hike, the KESC cut the fuel production set-up and charged five units of the power plant on gas. Only one unit is currently running on fuel. Moreover Sui gas has been not able to meet the electricity and gas crisis at the Bin Qasim power plant.
More importantly, the electricity crisis which have gripped the City has assumed greater proportions, with the shortage of 400-450 megawatts of power supply to the City. The metropolis is currently needed 2450 megawatts of electricity. Loadshedding continues unabated with maximum leads to six hours of supply cut three times a day on rotational basis.
There were reports of electricity shortage in Malir, Landi, Orangi and Korangi areas and closer vicinities even suffered tremendously. Loadshedding was even reported in Gulshan, FB Area, North Karachi and North Nazimabad.
Many residents so forth believes that power crisis occurred in slums more often and for a limited period in posh localities.
